Magic of broom stick

One can see hanged, in front of new house or shop
or tied with the machine or vehicle newly bought,
in some Indian ethnicity, strand of cotton strings
pierced through a lemon and few green chillies.

It is evil eye charm, to prevent effects of evil power
and wishes of the jealous people may not prosper.

I remember, as a child I used to live in a village.
We children of the village, whenever felt unwell,
by the respective guardians usually were taken
to ‘Kanhai’ who lived there, a saint like person.

Two lengthy thin sticks of an used jute broom
measured a span and four fingers, Kanhai took.
Slashed using his thumb nails, from that point,
swept quite a few times, over head of ill child.

Chanting some mantra, he did the black magic,
people of village had belief and mostly felt relief.
When I grew up young only then could realize
and revealed, behind that, what could be the myth.

It was because of villagers illiteracy and poverty
and no government hospital was in the vicinity.
